Chronic Pelvic Pain

There are many reasons for chronic pelvic pain, but there is a specific vascular condition that can sometimes be overlooked. The veins in the lower abdomen, known as the pelvis, may not function properly and can lead to pain. You may also notice fullness of your lower abdomen, as well as varicose veins in unusual locations, and not just the thighs or legs. Intimacy might be an issue as well.

If you continue to experience pelvic pain and other causes have been ruled out, we can evaluate you for Pelvic Congestion Syndrome. This typically involves a special abdominal ultrasound, which is performed at our facility.

  • Pain in the lower abdomen/pelvic area
  • A feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen, sometimes worse after standing
  • Lower back pain
  • Severe pain during menstrual periods
  • Pain during or after sexual intercourse
  • Varicose veins in “unusual” places

If after we perform a history and physical exam, and the ultrasound suggests that there might be a vascular reason for your pain, we would recommend a venogram, a special picture of your veins. Treatment of the abnormal veins is accomplished via minimal invasive techniques with no surgery. Outpatient treatment of this condition is performed at our state of the art office and you can resume your daily activities within 1-2 days. Some patients experience immediate relief of symptoms.
